RE: On The Road To Alaska

Been in Alaska since May 24th, Grayling, Lakers, & Rainbows up North. 45# King at Willow, Kenai Penisula since Jul 8, fished with the Bears at Russian River, a few Reds, lots of clams, Steelheads, and Dollies, 100# Halibut at Homer, headed to Seward for Silver Derby this weekend, currently at Quartz Creek NF Campground (Wow tax dollars at work) Taking it easy, not leaving until end of Sept.  Weather great, beats 100 deg + in Texas.  Sure don't want to think about leaving.  Great boondock spot South of Grand Prarie mentioned above, stayed there on way up.  Bye to those leaving,  Hope to meet some more great people.  Ya'll stay safe.

RE: On The Road To Alaska

RJ and I are talking about doing the Denali Hwy with the RV in September. Anyone been there lately? We were on Denali Hwy from 7 June thru 22 June. Had a great time, stayed at Brushkana Creek BLM, Boondocked (too many great spots to cover) and at Tangle Lakes BLM (free when we were there) Caught a lot of Grayling, in lakes and rivers both. Lake trout at Tangle. Great scenery. Should be lots of wildlife in Sep. Drive slow, 20 to 25 MPH with rig. Class A's on road when we were there. About 5-10 miles from Cantwell look WSW, clear day you can see Denali. I recommend it, wish I had my 4 wheeler, would have spent more time.

RE: On The Road To Alaska

We had 3 DP's in front, and one behind us on TOW.  Also while spending 2 wks onDenali Hwy, we saw several as well. Saw a Class A in Dawson City that had a homemade PVC pipe frame with 1/4"hardware cloth cable tied to frame to help deflect rocks.Kinda neat.

RE: On The Road To Alaska

All of you up or already returning I have a couple of questions. Headed up, in the Banff area now, and was planning the "Top of the World" Highway route. Should I or bypass going straight to Tok from Whitehorse? Wanted to take as many varied routes as possible, however am a little concerned about the road description/condition especially from Dawson City to Tok. Understand 100+ miles is gravel? Am running a 40ft pusher and read about having to be particularly careful especially if road happens to be wet or even if dry, about soft shoulders. Have any of you gone that route? Looking for your comments and suggestions. Thank you We did the TOW 24 May, enjoyed every particle of dust! :) You are coming to see Alaska, right? Do it. No hill for a stepper!! Dawson City is interesting as well. We didn't have any trouble, just take it easy. The U.S. customs agent at Poker Creek has a special stamp for your passport.

RE: Is Big Horn Highway #40 open?

We came through there May 13 & 14th. Road in good shape, had very little snow along sides of road. Should be OK. Watch for wildlife. Think you will enjoy.

RE: On The Road To Alaska

24Texas, Thanks for the info. Did you take your 5'r up the Dempster or just the tv? Just the tow veh. might want mud flaps to deflect sharp rocks from rear tires if you wanted to take camper, according to locals in Dawson. Road to Artic Circle would surely be OK, just slow down. Customs in Poker Creek asked only if I had any beef or fresh fruit from Canada, answer was no, nothing else was mentioned about food. Did ask if I had Vac. papers on dog. Very polite and helpful.

Diesel $1.66C/L in Dawson City. Dempster to Artic Circle in good shape, lots of wildlife.

RE: On The Road To Alaska

In Dawson City, Bonanza Gold CG. Plan on TOW Sat. Klondike Hwy is good shape. Yukon Hwy dept marks most of heaves and damage with red flags, little traffic, easy to navigate. Stayed at Frenchman Lake for 3 nights, beautiful place. Met some great people from Whitehorse, swapped stories and some Texas whitetail & Wy mule deer for some Moose. Good Trade!!

RE: On The Road To Alaska

We are at Shelby, Mt right now, plan on crossing at Sweetgrass tomorrow. Had planned on going through Hinton to Grand Prairie, but looks like weather could be too bad. Flexibility is the name of the game. You all be careful out there now.
